A small sample can introduce a colour. A full slab tells you how it moves. When you are choosing a natural material, both views have something useful to offer.

Step back first.

Look at the overall balance of light and dark, the direction of the veining, and the areas where the pattern becomes quieter. Imagine those details at the scale of an island, a splashback or a vanity.

Then look closer.

Natural variation is part of stone’s character. Take time to explore changes in tone, mineral details and the finish of the surface. Ask your supplier to explain any features you are unsure about.

Bring the room with you.

Cabinetry samples, a piece of flooring and a paint swatch can make a viewing much more useful. Place them beside the slab, photograph them together, and remember that light and screens can change the way colour appears.

Think about the placement.

Discuss the proposed layout with your fabricator before cutting. Vein direction, joins and the relationship between adjacent pieces can all shape the final result. The right layout helps a natural pattern feel considered in your space.

Take your time. The material you choose will become part of the everyday view.
